St.Agnes is steeped in history about the tin and copper mining industry and evidence of this once thriving industry in still visible today with former mines standing proud including the famous Wheal Coates tin mine that sits on the top of the cliffs overlooking Chapel Porth beach. The beach at Chapel Porth is roughly two miles from St.Agnes and lies at the bottom of a fairly steep road, surrounded by the backdrop of towering cliffs. Chapel Porth at high tide is nothing more than a tiny cove of a beach but at low tide, especially a low spring tide the beach becomes a vast expanse of sand that stretches as far down as Porthtowan beach. The nearest beach to St.Agnes is that of Trevaunance Cove, a former harbour of which little is left and a popular place during the summer months. Trevaunance Cove is backed up by the imposing sight of the steep cliffs and has a small beach, although there is no harbour as such any more there are still a few small fishing boats that operate from Trevaunance Cove. To the west of St.Agnes lies Porthtowan, a small village on Cornwall's Atlantic Ocean facing north coast. Porthtowan Beach is one of the UK's top surfing beaches consisting of wide soft white sands. Its name comes from the Cornish words 'Porth' and 'Tewynn' to mean Cove of Sand Dunes.
