Bodmin Moor

Bodmin Moor in Cornwall is a vast expanse of open moorland steeped in local history. The moor is dominated by giant granite tors which tower over the sweeping landscape of moorland, Bodmin Moor has been declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The Cheesewrings

Situated near Minions are the giant flat granite boulders known as The Cheesewrings, with the larger ones sat upon the smaller ones and some over 30 feet in circumference, although formed by natural erosion Cornish folklore blames Giants for them being there.

The Hurlers

The three stone circles known as The Hurlers stand on the edge of Bodmin Moor near the village of Minions. They are believed to date from the Bronze Age, roughly around c1500 BC. Many have speculated on the purpose of the circles from an astronomical clock to a ritual meeting place, however their original purpose was probably something to do with the druids, but today nobody knows. Legend tells of St.Cleer himself being responsible for their creation. Local men playing hurling on a Sunday, refused St.Cleer's demands that they desist hurling and go to church. St.Cleer was angered by their refusal, and he turned them to stone to play hurling forever on the Moor. The historian William Camden wrote in 1610 - 'The neighbouring inhabitants terme them Hurlers, as being by devout and godly error perswaded that they had been men sometime transformed into stones, for profaning the Lord's Day with hurling the ball'. The Hurlers is one of the largest prehistoric sites in England.
